In Spring 2023, the REA-D Foundation began a powerful partnership with the Black is Gold Club Organization at Hampton University, founded by Amber Anderson, the 65th Miss Hampton University. This student-led organization is dedicated to uplifting and empowering young Black women through mentorship, education, and service. As part of this collaboration, Black is Gold members volunteer with the REA-D Foundation, supporting community events, mentoring young girls, and playing a key role in youth empowerment initiatives across Hampton Roads.
Building on that momentum, in Spring 2025, the REA-D Foundation proudly launched a transformative partnership with the Hampton University School of Nursing and the Health Science Department, serving as a real-world learning site for six senior-level interns enrolled in HSC 499: Health Science Internship.
This partnership provides students in Hampton University's Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (BSHS) program with the opportunity to gain job-entry experience and develop leadership skills in a mission-driven environment. Interns work alongside REA-D Academy youth programs, community health efforts, and special events, applying their classroom knowledge to meaningful, community-centered work.
Guided by Alicia L. Coles, MA, Instructor of HSC 499, students engage in research, health education, outreach planning, and operational support that directly impacts the well-being of families in Hampton Roads.
Together, these partnerships represent the heart of REA-D Foundation’s mission: to build a strong, empowered, and educated future—starting with today’s college leaders and tomorrow’s community champions.
Interns complete 120 field hours and are responsible for reflective writing, professional goal setting, and monthly reports. They are expected to maintain professionalism, dress in business casual attire, and contribute positively to every assigned site.
