WHAT IS REA-D ACADEMY

REA-D ACADEMY

The REA-D Academy is the official training and mentorship program required for all contestants in the Miss R.E.A.-D. Scholarship Pageant. Designed for girls ages 6–15, the Academy is more than just pageant preparation — it is a confidence-building, leadership-focused experience that instills the values of Responsible, Education, Attitude, & Determination in every participant.

We accept only 10 girls per program, ensuring each participant receives personalized attention and guidance. Currently, REA-D Academy is offered:

  • Hampton Roads, VA Residents – starting in February annually

  • Pittsburgh, PA (Allegheny County Residents) – starting in July annually

An application and acceptance process is required to join the program. The cost to participate is $200, with an additional $300 fundraising commitment goal and the completion of at least one volunteer community service activity.

Through a unique partnership with Hampton University, each participant is paired with a mentor who guides her through the program. Over the course of the Academy, the girls train in the four main competition areas:

  • Talent – discovering, refining, and rehearsing their unique performance.

  • Speech – writing, memorizing, and delivering a message with confidence.

  • Walk – developing stage presence, poise, and grace.

  • Question & Answer – practicing clear, confident, and thoughtful responses.

REA-D Academy is built for young Black girls to grow in sisterhood, confidence, partnership skills, and leadership skills that will carry them through life. The program includes classwork, homework assignments, and active performance requirements to ensure each contestant is prepared for pageant day. Beyond competition skills, participants engage in volunteer initiatives and community activities, learning the importance of giving back and building lasting connections with their peers and mentors.

Each girl also receives a professional headshot photo shoot, a personalized marketing promo, and access to sponsorship opportunities to help promote and support her journey.

Upon completion of the program, each participant is honored with a trophy, certificate, special gifts, and an official pinning ceremony welcoming her into the sisterhood of the REA-D Foundation — officially becoming a REA-Dian.

By the end of the Academy, every girl leaves with not only the skills to compete but also the discipline, self-belief, and lifelong sisterhood that will help her shine far beyond the crown.
